As we finish our third week of session, many things have begun to move forward. We had our first debate and vote on a piece of legislation, legislators and committees have begun to produce more legislation, and the most significant highlight of the week came on Thursday, we, as Democrats, unveiled the Putting Iowans First plan.
Our first debate took place on Tuesday over Senate File 512 – Water Quality, the first part of the process was a vote to rescind the previous water quality bill HF 1440 that was passed last session 79-19. I voted no to this motion, but voted yes to SF 512 when it was clear that it was going to pass. I knew that this was going to be the only water quality bill this session and even though it does not do everything that I wish it would, it is a half-step closer to ensuring water quality for Iowans. The biggest concern for me was that this program plans to spend more money next year when we have not yet fixed our budget from last year.
The Putting Iowans First plan was unveiled Thursday morning at a press conference where I stood along-side House and Senate Democrats to show what we, as Democrats, stand for:
• Better-Paying Jobs
• A Revitalization of Small Towns and Rural Areas
• The Best Education in the Country
• A Quality of Life that Makes Iowa the #1 Best Place to Live
